Practical questions
Haemoglobin electrophoresis is not a CBC
A CBC describes blood cells and includes a haemoglobin measurement; electrophoresis investigates haemoglobin types. They may be used together but are not equivalent tests. If a request specifies haemoglobin electrophoresis, do not replace it with a general anaemia package simply because both mention haemoglobin.
General information for adults. Not a substitute for medical assessment.

Ask what question the type assessment addresses
The investigation can help assess inherited haemoglobin conditions. A result must be interpreted with the clinical picture and sometimes other tests. Do not assume an unusual fraction always means severe disease or that a normal routine haemoglobin value excludes every carrier state. Ask the clinician to explain the specific finding.
Mention transfusions and existing family reports
Provide recent transfusion details and previous haemoglobin investigations if available. Tell the clinician about known family conditions without trying to label relatives from memory. If a family-planning question is involved, ask whether genetic counselling or a different test is needed rather than assuming a single report gives every answer.
Keep the next step proportionate
Confirm who reviews the pattern, whether confirmation is required and whether any relatives need individual advice. Do not start iron solely because the report concerns haemoglobin; a suspected deficiency is a separate clinical question. Avoid posting identifiable family reports publicly to request a diagnosis.
Common questions
Can a CBC replace electrophoresis?
No. The investigations provide different information.
Should I mention a recent transfusion?
Yes. It may affect interpretation and test planning.
Does every haemoglobin finding need iron?
No. Treatment depends on the established clinical cause.
Sources and information limits
Sources support general medical principles, not the UAE booking policies or service availability. Confirm instructions and local arrangements with the care provider. The update date does not claim clinician review.
Content policy and review statusQuestions before arranging an appointment?
Enquire about the next steps and availability. An enquiry does not confirm a booking or diagnosis and is not an emergency service.
