Practical questions

Creatinine and eGFR: kidney blood tests are not a scan

A normal-looking scan and a kidney blood-test report answer different questions. Creatinine and estimated filtration relate to kidney function; imaging looks at structures. When a clinician requests kidney testing in Dubai, do not substitute a scan for laboratory work—or extra blood tests for imaging—without checking the purpose first.

Read the estimate alongside its inputs

Creatinine is a substance measured in blood and sometimes urine. An eGFR is an estimate calculated using relevant measurements and personal information, not a separate picture of each kidney. Ask whether the report includes both the measured value and the estimate, and keep the full report for interpretation.

Ask which additional question needs an answer

A clinician may request a urine measurement or imaging for a different reason from the blood test. Clarify what is needed before buying a package described as a complete kidney check. Confirm specimen instructions and discuss medicines, supplements and relevant recent illness rather than selecting additional tests by catalogue count.

Avoid making a chronic diagnosis from one figure

Take previous results to the review and ask how the current result fits your history. A change can require repeat assessment or further investigation, but a blog cannot determine the reason or the appropriate timing for you. Do not alter prescribed medicines or try to improve the number with unusual fluid intake before retesting.

Common questions

Is eGFR a kidney ultrasound result?

No. It is an estimate of filtration based on laboratory and personal data.

Can a blood test replace all kidney investigations?

No. Different tests answer different questions; follow the clinician’s request.

Should I change medicines to get a better result?

Do not change prescribed treatment without professional advice.
